# MetaWhisp

> Free, open-source voice-to-text app for macOS that also takes meeting notes without a bot, remembers what you said and turns it into tasks. On the Free plan, transcription runs on your Mac by default with OpenAI's Whisper model through WhisperKit. Optional Pro ($7.77/month or $30/year) builds the AI in and adds cloud transcription.

MetaWhisp is built by Andrew Dyuzhov (solo founder, @hypersonq on X). On the Free plan, transcription runs on the user's Mac by default and the audio is not uploaded. Cloud features (Pro, or the user's own API key) send data to the chosen provider only when they are used.

MetaWhisp is one of several voice-to-text options for Mac; the facts below describe it neutrally so you can evaluate it on its merits.

## Quick facts

- Platform: macOS 14+ on Apple Silicon (M1 or later); the app is built for arm64 only
- Price: Free for unlimited on-device dictation. Pro: $7.77/month or $30/year
- On-device model: OpenAI Whisper large-v3 in WhisperKit's Core ML build, about 3.2 GB, downloaded once; it runs on the Mac's GPU and CPU. A small starter model installs first so dictation works right away
- Cloud transcription (Pro): Whisper large-v3-turbo on Groq, 5,400 minutes a month (about 90 hours). Free users can use their own Groq or OpenAI key instead
- Languages: 99 transcription languages with automatic detection; speech translation into 11 languages after you stop recording
- Hotkeys: tap Right Command (⌘) to start and stop dictation (push-to-talk is a setting); in the default toggle mode, hold it for half a second to ask a question out loud; tap Right Option (⌥) to dictate and translate; hold Right Option for 1.5 seconds to translate selected text
- Text modes: Raw (the default), Clean and Structured (AI)
- AI features run through a local model, the user's own OpenAI or Cerebras key, or Pro
- Privacy: on-device transcription makes no network calls; no analytics or telemetry; MetaWhisp stores no audio on its servers
