Features99 languages

Speak any of 99 languages. It knows which one.

MetaWhisp listens for the language as well as the words. Dictate a note in Spanish, answer a colleague in German, write to family in Russian: each dictation is recognised in the language you actually spoke, with nothing to switch in between. On the Free plan it all happens on your Mac.

No switching, no settings

Detection is on for new installs. Pin a language only if you want to.

For multilingual speech to text on a Mac, MetaWhisp uses OpenAI’s Whisper, a single speech model trained on many languages at once. On new installs the language is detected automatically each time you dictate: MetaWhisp passes no language to the model, and Whisper identifies it from the audio, then writes the text in that language and script. That makes switching free: one dictation can be English and the next Japanese, and each lands in the app you are using. If you only ever speak one language, you can pin it under Language in Settings, which offers eleven choices. On the Free plan the model runs on your Mac, so every language works offline once the model is downloaded; Pro’s cloud transcription detects the language too. Accuracy differs from language to language, and OpenAI publishes the figures for each one.

Questions

Which languages does MetaWhisp understand?

The 99 languages of OpenAI’s Whisper, from English, Spanish and Chinese to Welsh, Swahili and Tagalog, and Cantonese, which Whisper large-v3 added. The full list is on this page.

Do I have to choose a language before I speak?

No. New installs detect the language every time you dictate, so you can write an email in English and the next message in Spanish. If you always speak one language, you can pin it under Language in Settings.

Which languages can I pin?

Eleven: English, Russian, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Italian and Ukrainian. Every other language works through detection.

How accurate is it in my language?

It depends on the language: Whisper is strongest where it had the most training audio, and OpenAI publishes its error rate for each language in the Whisper repository. The quickest test is your own voice: dictate a paragraph and read what comes back.

Does it work offline in every language?

Yes. On the Free plan one Whisper model on your Mac handles all of them, with no internet once it is downloaded. With Pro, the cloud model detects the language too.

Can it translate what I say?

Yes, with a separate key: tap Right ⌥ instead of Right ⌘ and your words are pasted in the language you chose, one of 11. Translating takes an AI model, which can be a free local one.

Talk in your own language
